Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) was established in 1905 and is a government owned institute situated in the sunniest region of New Zealand.

The Nelson-Marlborough region is at the heart of New Zealand’s aquaculture, horticulture, wine and fishing industries and plays a big role in forestry, aviation, tourism and the arts.

Students enjoy pristine beaches, exquisite national parks and outdoor activities ranging from kayaking and kite-surfing to biking, hiking and more. Nelson is the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park, one of the most popular tourist attractions in New Zealand.

Nelson and Blenheim are small, safe cities where students can relax and enjoy the laid-back Kiwi culture as well as great entertainment, cafes, shopping and festivals.

NMIT’s exciting programmes are recognized all over the world and attract over 5,000 students every year, including more than 500 internationals.

Students choose to study at NMIT for its world-class facilities, high standards of achievement, and personal attention from staff.

NMIT is a ‘Category 1’ institution, the highest ranking possible, as awarded by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) for educational performance and self-assessment. NMIT is also a member of the International Association of Universities (IAU).

NMIT offers a BA in Arts and Media with a focus on Visual Art & Design, Creative Writing, Graphics & Multimedia; Bachelor degrees  in Commerce; Information Technology; Social Work and Nursing; as well as Diplomas in the following areas: Adventure Tourism, Aircraft Engineering, Viticulture & Winemaking and Aquaculture.

NMIT maintains a campus in Nelson (60,000 inhabitants), and a smaller campus close to Blenheim (30,000 inhabitants), in the Marlborough region, which is New Zealand’s oldest wine region and famous for its “Sauvignon Blanc”. Viticulture and Aeronautical Engineering programmes are taught in Blenheim. All other programmes are offered at the main campus in Nelson.

NMIT has an internship programme that allows international students to engage in interesting work placements. Internships can be arranged individually on request and for almost any length of time and are in the following areas: business administration, engineering, finance, sales & marketing, human resources, information technology and others. Internships can be optionally combined with other courses and also English courses.

NMIT offers student accommodation on campus in Nelson in Nikau Apartments –  designed for one to four people. Students can either use their own apartment (studio) or rent a room in a two-, three-or four-bedroom apartment, which they share with other students.

The cost is approximately NZD 210 per week for a studio apartment and NZD 150 – 170 for a room in the shared apartments.

NMIT can also place students in homestay where they can Live with a New Zealand family in their own furnished room and share the family lifestyle. Full Homestay includes breakfast and dinner and costs NZ$220 per week. Independent Homestay, when you buy and cook your own food, costs NZ$155 per week.
